TECHNICAL INFORMATION 02 Technical information Viscosity classes according to ISO and SAE in comparison Different standards are used in practice to indicate the viscosity of oils. Industrial lubricants are usually designated according to the European ISO VG standard (= viscosity grade), where the numerical value indicates the average viscosity at 40 °C. In contrast, the American SAE classes (SAE = Society of Automotive Engineers) have become established for automotive lubricants. Engine oils are classified from 0W (very low viscosity) to 60 (high viscosity). The number range 70W to 140 was established for transmission oils. Using the following table, industrial lubricants and engine or transmission oils can be compared to each other and categorised according to their viscosity.
